Make a difference - Help kids attend asthma camp! Support Erik in his bid to "Climb for Clean Air"

Welcome family and friends to my American Lung Association “Climb for Clean Air” sponsorship site.

“A journey of a thousand miles, must begin with a single step.” -Chinese Proverb

I am excited to announce that I am participating in the American Lung Association of Washington's 15th annual CLIMB FOR CLEAN AIR. In July of 2003, I will be climbing one of the highest peaks in the continental United States, Mount Rainier, with the guidance of mountaineering guru, Lou Whittaker and other climbing professionals. Although this journey is more like 14,410 vertical feet, rather than a thousand miles, it is still necessary to begin with the first single step - and that is why this website is here.

I have promised the Lung Association that I would raise $3,500 by May 1, 2003 to help aid them in their fight against various lung diseases, and educating the public of the hazards of smoking. In order to fulfill my goal of assisting the Lung Association and climbing Mt. Rainier, I need the help of individuals like you, to help sponsor me in my endeavors. Rather than climbing Mt. Rainier solely for personal reasons, all of the money raised will be used in a variety of ways.

Such as:
· In helping to bring greater attention to and fight the increasing air pollution in our area.
· Helping to prevent lung diseases such as asthma, emphysema, chronic bronchitis, lung cancer, tuberculosis and cystic fibrosis. These various forms of lung disease accounted for 32% of infant deaths, making it the number one killer of babies under the age of one.
· Helping to reduce tobacco use, especially among young people, which is responsible for 419,000 deaths in the US each year. Tobacco causes more deaths than cocaine, heroin, alcohol, homicide, suicide, traffic accidents, fires and AIDS combined.

You may ask, "Why do you want to do this Erik?
Wow! Good question! The first reason is my idealist desire to see a global cessation and eradication of cigarette manufacturing and cigarette smoking. I feel this way because of the death of 2 of my grandparents due to emphysema caused by smoking. Another reason is that my father was a smoker when I was a kid, and I truely believe that if my mom, my sisters and I had not convinced him to quit, he wouldnt be in as good health as he is today. Moreover, I too tried puffing on death sticks for a few years, but realized while taking a college biology class, that I was killing myself one lung cilia at a time. Lastly, Climbing Mount Rainer is on my “Life’s To Do List” and what a great view it will be from the top! (Plus its alot less dangerous than Everest!)
